Random Scribbles #5 and 6 - Justin Townes Earle and jug music

It's been an intense last couple of weeks. Lots of music and many thoughts. So let's start with the first week of June. June 4th, The Kent Stage put on an "alley" show - literally smack in between their building and the building next door. It felt very random but very comfortable, almost as if we were on someone's balcony in the city jamming and having a few beers. The alley show (which featured local musicians JiContinue

Random Scribbles #4

Random Scribbles #4 Have you ever met a person that no matter what happens, you can't help but smile and appreciate every moment you're around them? I tend to be a private person; not allowing myself to be absorbed into people that have contagious personalities. Therefore, this type of situation does not happen for an extended period of time. This same thing can be applied to music and the many local/regional musicians I have met, befriended and parted ways with over the past six years. But ther… Continue

Random Scribbles #3

Scribbles #3 is actually in reference to an open mic night I attended in Chesterland, Ohio. The place was packed and there was not any room to stand, much less sit and play. I walked in, wiggled my way into the middle of the room and huddled behind a desk so I could gather my thoughts. For someone that has a career based upon organization, this was a headache from the time… Continue

On May 7th I had the honor of opening for Tom Evanchuck, Jim Snively and Gypsy Dave and The Stumpjumpers at The Kent Stage in Kent, Ohio. Click on the links and you can listen to all of th… Continue

Random Scribbles #1

As I continue to support local folk musicians and songwriters and attend their shows and gatherings, I realize that I always come home with wadded pieces of paper and folded napkins in my pockets and in my messenger bag; loaded with words and sentence fragments that I scribbled during the course of enjoying a great house blend coffee, a local micro-brewed beer or a tasty sandwich. Sometimes these words are reflections of the show; the type of people coming in, how the musician/artist is interact… Continue

How and why I love "folk" music

It is a safe bet that every person in this group, regardless of their experience, talent and business affiliations, absolutely loves folk music. The term "folk" mind you, is a very broad term, a large sweep of the broom to save time in discussion and summarize a history that reaches as far back as before the Mayflower reached the shores. I remember singing a Dwight Yokam song in the bathtub when I was little. I think the song was "You're The One That Makes Me Cry." I had no idea what it was tha… Continue
