We have two more terrific shows for you this week, both at The Maze, starting with Martin Simpson on Sunday 22nd March. Martin who was born just up the road in Scunthorpe is a jewel in the crown of traditional music and a stellar performer on the international stage. After the release of 'Prodigal Son' in 2007 he was nominated in 2008 for five BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards and promptly won two of them, best album for 'Prodigal Son', and best original song 'Never Any Good', a song about his late father. His ability to tell a story in song, with the most poignant and beautiful guitar accompaniment and accomplished song-writing skills, is breathtaking.

Then on Friday 27th March we are pleased to welcome Diana Jones. Diana Jones had released two finely crafted albums in the 1990s, but it wasn’t until she released My Remembrance of You in 2006 that she found her own voice. She had discovered a connection, both biological and artistic, to the sounds of old-time Appalachia, unleashing her private muse and creating a critically acclaimed record. The three years since that breakthrough have been a whirlwind. Diana has landed the opening slot on high-profile European tours with Richard Thompson and Mary Gauthier and has been the featured invitee at folk festivals in the US, the UK and Ireland.

One of her new songs, "Henry Russell's Last Words," has been recorded by Joan Baez, while another, "If I Had a Gun," has been recorded by Gretchen Peters. Diana’s own versions of those songs can be heard on her new album, Better Times Will Come, an ambitious effort that consolidates and extends the leap forward of the preceding record. Please Note: Doors open at 7pm as this show will finish by 10.15pm.
